Join RSH mentor Oluchi Ihedoro as she shares in this vlog some safeguarding reflections and learnings gathered during an exchange meeting she facilitated for civil society organisations (CSOs) in Lagos, Nigeria.
The Safeguarding RSH Nigeria Hub rounded off its first phase of the mentoring programme in August 2021. During the exchange meeting towards the programme’s end, 3 mentored CSOs shared key takeaways, while 5 non-mentored organisations also took part in the exchange. These had earlier participated in a focus group discussion organised by RSH to improve the RSH Nigeria Hub’s offerings.
During the meeting, participants reflected on how the RSH safeguarding mentoring programme improved organisational culture and made impacts on their organisations.
“On that mentorship of RSH, we’ve learnt so much more about safeguarding,” said Nneoma Ezuma from the organisation Women’s Rights and Health Project. She added that before, “we didn’t have the full context of what it meant.” She added that the mentoring has helped build the organisation’s capacity, develop their policies, and supported the organisation in holding safeguarding trainings.
Later on, Adebukola Adeyemi of Humanity Family Foundation for Peace and Development (HUFFPED) highlighted the mentoring programme’s relevance to her organisation’s vision of improving staff relationship and respect within HUFFPED.
“We’ve been able to differentiate between Gender-based Violence issues and safeguarding (from Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Sexual Harassment), said Waheed Oguntade from the Centre for Citizens with Disability. Then they have also made changes to their staffing based on this distinction.
The participants also discussed benefits of having a strengthened safeguarding system as well as challenges to achieving this at the national level.
To assist less-resourced organisations, the RSH also provides safeguarding support to CSOs at no cost through the “Ask an expert” service. Click here to learn more and apply for the service.
